Project Overview

NovoGen Engineering Solutions was awarded the contract for Project Management and Client Engineer Services associated with the construction of a power plant in Kilshane, County Dublin, within the Fingal County Council area. NovoGen will use its expertise to oversee the design, build and installation of the 300 MW turbine and generator, which will power the plant, including the commissioning and testing stage before it is connected to EirGrid.

The Challenge

This project is about resilience and flexibility. As Ireland moves towards a net zero energy system, it needs reliable backup generation to complement growing renewable resources. It also offers a future pathway to decarbonisation, with the potential for hydrogen blending and other low-carbon fuels. The key challenges include:

Technical and Engineering Challenges

  • Complex Turbine Integration: The plant will use a high-capacity Ansaldo Energia turbine, requiring precise alignment, installation, and integration with generator systems.
  • Commissioning and Testing: Responsibility for end-to-end commissioning involves coordination of mechanical, electrical, and control systems to conform to regulatory and safety standards.
  • Grid Connection Complexity: Synchronisation with EirGrid demands accurate adherence to grid stability protocols, load balancing, and testing under stringent operational criteria.

Project Management Challenges

  • Cross-Border Coordination: NovoGen is a Northern Ireland firm executing a contract in the Republic of Ireland, necessitating adept handling of legal, regulatory, and logistical differences.
  • Supplier and Contractor Coordination: Managing multiple stakeholders, including designers, turbine suppliers, civil contractors, and utility authorities, requires sophisticated scheduling, resource allocation, and risk management.
  • Timeline Management: Construction started in early 2026, with commissioning expected in 2028, placing pressure on efficient adherence to project milestones to prevent cost overruns.

Our Solution

NovoGen Engineering Solutions faces a multi-dimensional set of challenges, including highly technical engineering demands, cross-border project management, specialised workforce scaling, regulatory compliance, and risk management under confined timelines. Successfully navigating these challenges will be essential for the plant’s timely commissioning, alignment with Ireland’s energy transition goals, and consolidation of NovoGen’s position in green energy technology project management.

Key Deliverables

NovoGen’s deliverables emphasise both hands-on technical oversight of critical plant components and strategic project management, ensuring that the Kilshane power plant is delivered on time, safely, and operationally ready for connection to the national grid.

Results & Benefits

  • NovoGen Engineering Solutions’ involvement in the Kilshane power plant project will deliver operational excellence, technical assurance, and strategic growth opportunities. The combined benefits encompass immediate project outcomes, such as on-time commissioning and safe grid integration, while also supporting longer-term objectives, including corporate expansion, workforce skill enhancement, and leadership in green technologies.
  • This dual impact underscores NovoGen’s strength in translating specialised engineering expertise into tangible project results and economic value for both the company and the wider renewable energy sector compliance with relevant regulatory standards.

Why NovoGen?

NovoGen Engineering Solutions was selected for the Kilshane power plant project due to its specialist engineering expertise in high-value sectors like aerospace and hydrogen technology, its proven capability to manage complex projects such as turbine and generator installation
